Exams to meet the integration requirement or obtain a permanent residence permit

All courses to prepare for exam

If you have an integration requirement, wish to become a Dutch citizen through naturalisation or obtain a permanent residence permit, you can take the following examinations:

Note: Did you get your MVV after 1 January 2015? Then in addition to the State Examination NT2, you must also take these two sections of the Civic Integration Exam in order to meet the integration requirement:

  • Knowledge of Dutch Society (KNM)
  • Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market (ONA)

Which exam is right for you? Our advice:

  • Have you completed higher vocational or university education and would you like to express yourself in Dutch at that level?
  • => Staatsexamen NT2-II
  • Have you completed intermediate vocational training and would like to have a reasonable command of Dutch?
    => Staatsexamen NT2-1
  • Is your level of education lower than intermediate? Or is there no need for you to speak Dutch, but do you need a certificate for naturalisation purposes, a Dutch passport or a residence permit?

Would you like to take a course to prepare for the Civic Integration Exam or State Examination NT2? We advise you to take a general language course first to raise your proficiency level in Dutch to the desired level (A2 for civic integration, B1 for the State Examination NT2-1 or B2 for the State Examination NT2-2). Once you’ve reached your target level, you can choose to take a specific examination course.

Het basisexamen inburgering in het buitenland,

People who want to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days must apply for a long-stay visa before they travel to the Netherlands. This visa is also called an authorisation for temporary residence (MVV). To obtain an MVV, you need to take the Basic Integration Exam Abroad at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country. In this exam, you must show that you can read and speak Dutch at the A1 level.
