Jeanet van Omme has taught creative writing at the Schrijfatelier for more than 20 years. In 2018, she also started teaching Dutch as a second language. To Jeanet, teaching her weekly class is like going on a world trip in her own city. It is truly something special to have people from so many different cultures in one classroom!
Jeanet makes sure her classroom is a place where her students feel safe. She gives everyone individual attention and builds in lots of laughter and fun. She believes that having fun is essential because it boosts students’ confidence. Learning a new language is a creative endeavour, a gradual process of trial and error. Her top tip for those who want to learn Dutch is: enjoy the beauty of the language and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
When not working as a teacher, Jeanet can be found getting her hands dirty in her garden or walking her dog, Sjaak. She also writes poetry. Jeanet is married and has two grown-up sons.
