Sonja Kupper

In 2021, Sonja obtained her certificate as a teacher of NT2 (Dutch as a second language) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. After that, she taught Dutch to highly educated non-native speakers. In 1998 she completed the 4-yaer education Oriental Languages and Communication. During this education, she was mainly focussed on learning Chinese. In addition to Chinese, she speaks English, German and a little Italian. She knows how fun and difficult it is to learn a foreign language. She likes to use her own experiences with learning foreign languages in her teaching. In addition to learning languages, she has other hobbies. She loves yin yoga, zumba, sabar dance, aqua aerobics, cooking and traveling.

Before Sonja became a Dutch teacher, she worked for 11 years as a civil servant at the immigration department of the municipality of Amsterdam. When she worked there, she came into contact with people from all kinds of countries on a daily basis. She found that fun and interesting. Through her work, she took an English course so that she could communicate even better with the immigrants. She really liked the course and then contemplated that she might like to teach herself. That’s when she decided to start the teacher training at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

Sonja is a friendly and cheerful person. In the classroom, Sonja gives individual attention to each student and ensures a safe learning environment. She really enjoys meeting people from all kinds of countries. She likes to provide information about the Dutch language and culture and also finds it interesting to receive information about other cultures.
